Metal Desk Remodel
January 10, 2013
I finished the desk. I loved how it turned out, but more importantly, Emily loves her new art desk.
Here was the before:
Hands down favorite part for her is the chalkboard top. My dad did an awesome job making a new top for the desk. Thanks, Dad! It was pretty terrible before. In addition to at least 20 nasty pieces of gum, it had an entire corner broken off. So after he made a new top, I used chalkboard paint to finish it off.
I made a coordinating fabric drawer to go in the desk. She wanted to leave the other shelves open. I was happy to hear that. That was not a fun basket to make, but it sure turned out cute for her.
Then my mom found the chair for her desk. It was boring and brown, so I got out another trusty, rusty can of spray paint and now it’s perfect. Thanks, Mom!
Think this is a happy girl with her new desk? It was all she wanted for her birthday this year. I was glad I was able to pull it off for her!

That is very cool! I was actually looking for a desk for myself and came across your remodel. I have heard about the chalkboard spray. Is that how your Dad did it?

My dad cut a piece of plywood for me and rounded the corners. Then he put the edge piece on it to make the sides look nice. I then used chalkboard paint to paint the plywood. I’ve never used the spray paint chalkboard paint, I’ve always used a pint size can that has lasted me forever! I’m guessing the spray paint type would work well too. Good luck with your desk project.
