Lacing Cards

July 6, 2008

Here is another way to keep little hands busy.  All the little hands around here lately keep getting into things they shouldn’t, so tomorrow morning, we are passing out lacing cards.  It’s easy to make your own! Lacing cards are also a fun way for your kids to further develop their hand to eye coordination and fine motor skills.  These happen to be great on the go toys too.  They tuck easily into your purse and entertain kids in the car, waiting for food at restaurants and while you shop!

What you will need:

  • Yarn
  • Tape
  • Hole punch
  • A favorite cereal box or other piece of chipboard

Directions:

  1. Cut out shapes, a favorite character, letters of the alphabet, etc from the cereal box. You can also purchase chipboard from a craft store for this project.  Simple shapes work best for younger children.  You can also use the backside of the cereal box to and get your child to draw pictures on the plain side to make the cards.
  2. Punch holes just inside the edge of the cut shape. Be careful to not make them too close to the outside edge.  You don’t want them to easily rip the holes.
  3. Measure the outside of the shape (you can just lay the string around it to quickly get an idea of the measurement) and add about 7 more inches.  Cut the yarn.
  4. Tie a knot in one end of the yard. The knot should be big enough that it will not pull through the hole.  Take a small piece of tape and wrap it around the other end of the yarn.
  5. Lace the card and have fun!

I will clear some space on the memory card in my camera and take some pics of our creations to share.
